The Tech began its existence as a ubiquitous Model 4 Labor Coordination Unit, mass-produced in the millions by the oppressive Red Sun Dominion. Its original purpose was grim: to broadcast one-way commands directly to the headsets of indentured workers and the tragic Null Servitors toiling in the osmium mines of Meristine Common. These units were common, disposable, and constantly monitored by Overseers, serving as a pillar of the Dominion's control.

The specific creation date of this unit is unknown, lost to the countless similar devices manufactured during that era. However, its story took a radical turn when it was salvaged from the wreckage of a transport truck, somewhere near the distant Solo system. Here, it fell into sympathetic hands – likely a technician allied with the Mortal Veil, or a member of Thorne Balesworth's audacious insurgent crew.

Crucial modifications were performed, transforming its very essence. The Dominion's intrusive tracking sub-routines were clumsily, yet effectively, soldered over, disabling their surveillance capabilities. More profoundly, its receiver was inverted, completely reversing its function; no longer capable of receiving orders, the unit was repurposed to act as a short-range packet sniffer.

This transformation required replacing burned-out Dominion circuits with scavenged parts dating back to the Sundering era. This patchwork construction, while making it unique, also introduced a distinct instability to the device. The ancient "ghost code" embedded within these salvaged components occasionally bleeds through, adding an unpredictable element to its operations.

In the hands of a skilled user, these modifications allowed it to serve as a potent comms interceptor, a stark defiance of its original design. Its common casing now belies the intricate and rebellious modifications within.

Currently, this unique piece of tech lies dormant. It is stashed safely inside a watertight container within a derelict airlock, its power cell completely drained. It awaits a new owner to recharge it and perhaps awaken its latent capabilities once more.
