The Veilkeeper Monks were originally established as an elite sect, wholly dedicated to the Gods of Order. Their early purpose was to maintain balance and structure within the world, a mission they pursued with unwavering resolve. Their rigorous initiation involved the brutal process of Hollowing, stripping initiates of their names, pasts, and faces, replacing them with the Golden Veil to eradicate individual identity, which they perceived as the root of chaos.
Following the tumultuous events of the Shadow War and the subsequent corruption of the Bukhara Spire Gateways, the Veilkeepers' purpose underwent a dramatic and necessary shift. Their focus turned from general order to actively combating the rising tide of chaotic energies unleashed upon the world, a task that further solidified their austere methods.
In 1232, the Order faced a significant setback when their reputation was tarnished during the Shroud of the Red Cloaks heist. Thieves employed sophisticated sonic magic to disorient the Veilkeepers, enabling them to successfully steal a Cubic Gate. This event exposed a critical vulnerability in their defenses.
In response to this humiliating failure, the Order underwent a radical reformation, transforming their very nature. Modern Veilkeepers are now ritually deafened or rigorously trained to ignore all auditory stimuli, relying instead on tremorsense and a unique, hive-mind-like coordination known as the Silent Weave. This adaptation made them impervious to sound-based attacks and enhanced their collective vigilance.
It is from this reformed, silent, and unified Order that entities like The Creature emerged. Having likely endured the Hollowing process and possibly further ritualistic alterations in line with the Veilkeepers' new directives, The Creature functions as an extension of their will, devoid of personal identity but imbued with their purpose. It embodies the modern Veilkeepers' silent, unyielding resolve.
Today, The Creature is often found diligently performing the Veilkeepers' most critical tasks. This includes patrolling forbidden archives, guarding one of the few remaining uncorrupted holy sites, or standing sentinel over a sealed Bukhara Spire Gateway, ensuring no chaotic energies escape or infiltrate their sacred charges.
