A Chronological History of Coia

Year 1 01 February 1 - Founding 01: The narrative of Coia officially begins with its founding. 06 June 1 - Settlers arrive on Coia: Intrepid explorers arrived on the western shores of Coia, discovering the magnificent Bukhara Spires. These enormous crystalline formations of unknown origin reached into the sky, emanating powerful magic throughout the continent. The settlers had come from across the sea, searching for a new beginning in this resource-rich land.

Year 67 - 75: The Shadow War 29 June 67 - The Shadow War Begins: After 62 years, as settlers learned to harness the magic of the spires, they inadvertently awoke a malevolent force from another plane. This force, with designs on both the land and its people, marked the beginning of the Shadow War. Using the spires as interdimensional gateways, all manner of monsters and demons began pouring into Coia, devastating the inhabitants and their newly established settlements. 16 April 75 - The Shadow War Ends: After years of relentless invasion, the inhabitants of Coia devised a plan to turn the tide against the extra-dimensional forces. They built colossal Bukhara Spire Gateways atop the natural portals that had been exploited by their enemies. These constructed gates successfully halted the invasion, but the inherent magic of the portals allowed them to be used for instant travel across the continent, leading to an explosion of settlements.

Years 75 - ~575: Commerce, Conflict, and Corruption Following the Shadow War, the Gateways, initially intended for defense, soon became conduits of both commerce and escalating conflict. Merchants, drawn by the promise of untold riches, exploited these gateways to facilitate vast trade networks. This pursuit of wealth eventually led to the lucrative, yet morally reprehensible, slave trade, which in turn fueled constant strife and discord across Coia.

These various conflicts inevitably erupted into a full-blown Civil War, a protracted struggle that would ravage the continent for nearly five centuries. The chaos and devastation wrought by this millennia-long conflict had a profound and terrible impact on the Bukhara Spire Gateways. The once stalwart structures were transformed by the incessant turmoil, twisting into corrupted portals. They began linking Coia to the darkest recesses of other planes, becoming harbingers of doom that unleashed a tide of unnatural horrors upon the already beleaguered continent.

Years 97 - 169: The Dragon's Fury and Meklen's Legacy 18 June 97 - The Awakening: Decades after the uneasy tranquility following the Shadow War, Coia faced a new internal invasion. A horde of dormant dragons awoke deep within The Iron Mountain, spewing forth and laying waste to the city of Ironhold. These fearsome beasts terrorized the continent for seven devastating years. 05 June 104 - Into The Iron Mountain: After seven years of dragon-wrought chaos, Meklen Armash discovered a crucial weakness in the dragons. He rallied The Seastone Resistance at Ironhold, launching a final assault on Iron Mountain during a brief antimagic window. Meklen delivered the decisive blow, securing a hard-won victory against the dragon posing as Tiamet and freeing Coia, though at a steep cost. 17 September 104 - The Fall of Hearthaven: Decimated at Iron Mountain, the surviving dragons, led by the vengeful Zarithar the Crimson Shadow, conspired for reprisal. They descended upon Hearthaven, a key Resistance hub, with catastrophic force. Despite the valiant defense led by Pahpidah Poulapolous and the fortified tunnels beneath the town, Hearthaven fell, and the dragons captured crucial Resistance figures. 19 September 104 - Dragons Invade Whisperwind: Two days after the fall of Hearthaven, the dragons tracked Meklen Armash and The Seastone Resistance to their secret refuge in the fortress of Whisperwind. Believing Armash to be inside, they prepared to exact their revenge. 20 September 104 - The Fall of Whisperwind: Driven by vengeance, the dragons devastated Whisperwind Fortress, cornering Meklen Armash. In a desperate final stand, Meklen channeled the necrotic essence of The Dead Wyrm, slaying a lead dragon but perishing from the profane power. His sacrifice shattered the Resistance, whose remnants later evolved into the monastic Order of Sea and Stone. 07 October 169 - The Fall of Whisperwind (Rebuilt): Following Meklen Armash’s victory, vengeful dragon cultists resurrected the beast as The Dead Wyrm, a Specter of hatred. Unbound, the Wyrm, with other dragons, hunted down and killed Armash, leaving his son Renald for dead. Renald survived, raised by Tim Son of Scott, and grew to found the Order of Sea and Stone, rebuilding Whisperwind Fortress as their stronghold. In 169 CR, The Dead Wyrm’s relentless hunt for the Meklen bloodline led it to the rebuilt Whisperwind, annihilating the fortress and seemingly wiping out the Order with the presumed death of Sir Meklen Renald.

Years 310: A Precursor Vanguard Emerges 07 June 310 - The Schism of Memory: The legendary Dragonbone Vanguard’s consciousnesses inexplicably merged into mercenary bodies, awakening to a Goblin ambush. A blue tiefling's sacrifice fueled their brutal counter-attack, only for them to discover their victims were unarmed innocents. Haunted by this first tainted act and fragmented memories, these now merged heroes, identified by Meklen Tiammen as Rollo's operatives, grappled with shattered identities, embarking on a dark, morally ambiguous journey far removed from their heroic legacy. 10 June 310 - A Famly of Goblins: A group of adventurers, hired by Rollo, made the 30-mile trek to a Goblin village. At nightfall, they murdered their way through the village at Arcon's urging, efficiently dispatching goblins and wolves to retrieve the targeted Bukhara Shard. The Bay Goblin Camp was decimated, fulfilling their contract with Rollo. 13 June 310 - The Unsealing of Stonewatch: Manipulated by the lich Ariel, adventurers inadvertently shattered the ward imprisoning her by destroying Demon Prince Orcus on Stonewatch Island. Now free and vengeful, Ariel plans to raise an undead army against Emberfield, unleashing a new and formidable evil upon Coia and triggering a devastating new conflict. 23 July 310 - After the Fight in the Den: Seeking The Finger of Kaejor, heroes explored Weaver’s Den, discovering battle remnants and the ageless boy Viremon. He revealed Ursula’s followers had trapped her for dangerous experiments, transforming her into a lich. The party defeated Ursula, retrieving The Finger of Kaejor, which Seraphina Stormwind then used to break her wild magic curse. 05 September 310 - Head of the Order of Sea and Stone Assassinated: A party, at the direction of the Unchained, tracked Andre, head of The Order of Sea and Stone, to the Hidden Relic Chapel in Rueside. Andre, manipulating a broken Bukhara Spire Gateway with the Bukhara Shard, warned them of Redevus's plan to destroy the Stone Gates and sever Coia's magic. Despite Andre's desperate pleas to protect Coia, the party, after extracting information, shoved two daggers through his neck, assassinating him and acquiring the Bukhara Shard.

Years 1232 - 1237: Rising Threats and Betrayal 25 October 1232 - The Shroud of the Red Cloaks: The cunning Red Cloaks gang orchestrated a daring heist on the Monastery of the Sundered Veil. They used dark magic and terrifying howls to distract the monks, allowing elite infiltrators to scale cliffs and breach The Inner Sanctum. There, they shattered the reliquary protecting a powerful Cubic Gate, an audacious act that elevated the Red Cloaks to a major regional threat and subtly revealed the artifact's existence. 16 March 1237 - The Night of Shattering: House T’Sarran’s ambitious rise provoked a secret alliance of rival houses in Menzoberranzan. Shadowblade assassins launched a merciless assault, burning the T’Sarran estate and slaughtering most of the family. Sszardin T’Sarran, the sole public survivor, was imprisoned as a scapegoat, solidifying rivals' power and forever reshaping the city's treacherous political landscape. 17 March 1237 - Descent into Darkness: Cast into the Pit, the surviving T'Sarran family navigated a monster-filled illusory cavern system. Hunted by Shadow Stalkers and a memory-draining Whispering Shroud, they fought for survival alongside an unlikely ally. This harrowing ordeal hardened them, revealing subterranean horrors and igniting their quest for vengeance. 18 March 1237 - The Betrayal in the Forsaken Prison: A desperate prison break plunged the Prison of the Forsaken into elemental chaos. Freedom proved fatal for Sszardin, as supposed ally Aarog, a bounty hunter, betrayed and slew him, ending his bloodline. Mikgrym escaped, haunted by the treachery, while Aarog vanished with the body, leaving a bloody legacy and dark questions.

Year 1248: The Dragonbone Vanguard's Crusade 15 March 1248 - The Genesis of The Dragonbone Vanguard: A diverse group including Nym, Lenore, Sszardin T’sarran, Moose Knuckle, Emis Faralei, and Nicodemus Hartwick were kidnapped from a Bukhara Spire Gateway. They awakened in crude mountain jails, stripped and watched by their captors. This harrowing experience, though they were strangers meeting for the first time, forged them into the famed Dragonbone Vanguard, tasked with ending the current demonic threat. 21 March 1248 - The Cocker Mountain Gate is Destroyed: After learning about the devastation in Altherstab caused by a Goblin horde, The Dragonbone Vanguard decided to rescue captured villagers. They confronted dark threats in a demonic realm, where multiple waves of goblins emerged from a portal. The group decided to destroy the portal, and after enough damage, the center film cleared, indicating it was no longer an active threat. 01 April 1248 - The Berkeso Bounty: Demonic corruption, manifesting as monstrous goat-like creatures, plagued the Cave of Rot near Berkeso. The Dragonbone Vanguard answered Lord Arris's bounty, bravely delving into the cavern. Their hard-won victory earned their reward, marked their first strike against extra-planar forces, and initiated a chilling demonic vision, setting them on a path to uncover a much larger abyssal plot. 06 April 1248 - The Ambush at Serpent's Tooth: Fresh from victory, The Dragonbone Vanguard's sea journey was ambushed by corrupted Merfolk, twisted by a dark spire's influence. A brutal battle erupted on the storm-tossed Horizon Reacher at Serpent's Tooth. Their hard-won victory solidified Captain Rondak's loyalty and confirmed the enemies' awareness and the deep-seated corruption they faced, signifying their quest for the spires had truly begun. 20 April 1248 - Wigham Gate Destroyed: On their mission to destroy the Bukhara Spire Gateways, The Dragonbone Vanguard entered a swamp and encountered water creatures. After fighting them back, they came across the Wigham portal, guarded by two creatures, which they dispatched with some difficulty. The group then destroyed the seemingly dead portal, successfully taking out another gateway. 21 April 1248 - The Fistandria Incursion: To access Candlekeep for research, The Dragonbone Vanguard helped Jayson Boothebarrel find a missing sage. They discovered the sage had vanished into Fistandria's interdimensional mansion, a magical labyrinth overrun by creatures. They thwarted a hidden magical incursion on Candlekeep, gained crucial information for their quest, and Jayson found a new purpose working at the legendary library. 01 May 1248 - The Cleansing of the Tetbury Shitter: Hired by Tetbury's Lord, The Dragonbone Vanguard cleansed the city's Shitter sewers, which were infested by planar energy mutated aberrations. They thwarted a Spectator's mind magic, felled various Gricks, including an Alpha, and ultimately cornered a powerful Spirit Naga. This decisive victory eradicated the monstrous threat, solidified their reputation as capable heroes, and secured valuable resources for their ongoing quest. 20 June 1248 - The Destruction of the Herthe Gateway: The Dragonbone Vanguard investigated Herthe's church, uncovering a demonic Bukhara Spire Gateway in the catacombs. After a brutal fight against its guardians, they unleashed a concentrated assault, destroying the portal in a violent explosion and cleansing the area. This victory, however, intensified demonic incursions across Coia through remaining gateways, forcing the Vanguard to act faster. 03 July 1248 - The Dragon's Ire: The Dragonbone Vanguard investigated a village's dragon curse, battling and defeating a ferocious red dragon and Fire Elemental. Their victory was short-lived as a colossal Black Dragon emerged, scattering the heroes. Surviving this terrifying ambush, they now suspected a greater unidentified planar threat was displacing Coia's most formidable creatures, hinting at a world-spanning danger. 20 July 1248 - The Abishai Gambit: Framed for stealing the Rod of Rulership by Abishai, The Dragonbone Vanguard fled Coia, discovering elemental relics. After an Abishai ambush, Paladin Mithac aided them. They tracked the Rod but fell into a trap, its power mesmerizing half the party, culminating in their separation through a mysterious portal, scattering the heroes to unknown destinations. 01 November 1248 - The Battle of Highborne Summit: The Dragonbone Vanguard destroyed a demonic portal in Shadowfell amidst a chaotic, collapsing fortress. Though victorious, Retta remained behind, and the group splintered. Now wanted fugitives, the remaining Vanguard hid as their actions caused a power vacuum, escalating political tensions across Coia and forever changing their destiny.

Year 1249: New Heroes and Escalating Threats 27 February 1249 - Wolves Got Wolfgang: A group of heroes rescued Wolfgang the barkeep from Herthe after he was trapped by an unusually aggressive Wolf pack in a den just outside town. The Roth family now hides, preparing for a larger confrontation. 10 May 1249 - The Archbishop's Revelation: The Unholy Trinity, a band of heroes, became entangled in a conspiracy of controlled dragon attacks, exorbitant taxes, and local corruption. Their investigation revealed these events were orchestrated by three powerful lords—Geddy Lee, David Lee Roth, and Mangdaor Roth—who had been corrupted by the demigod lich Velsharoon. The heroes confronted Archbishop Cyril Brazen, who, after a tense dinner, dropped his disguise, revealing his true form as a terrifying Alhoun. As the continent struggles to rebuild in the wake of its millennia-long struggle, the echoes of its turbulent past reverberate through the corridors of power, serving as a stark reminder of the fragility of peace in a world haunted by the sins of its ancestors.
