Backstory

Early Life (1223-1230 CE)

In the rugged, untamed wilderness of the Cocker Mountains, Dig entered the world amidst a landscape where survival hinged on fierce tenacity. His clan, like many bugbear tribes, subsisted through hunting and ambushing unfortunate travelers. From a tender age, Dig demonstrated an uncanny ability to sense the hidden energies swirling around him, which earned him the title 'Dig the wierd' among the others in his clan. The dismissive taunt lingered until a fateful day when an ill-conceived ambush on a band of traveling monks spiraled into chaos, shattering his clan and sending him fleeing into a nearby cave.

The Wild Magic Incident  (1231 CE)

Inside the cave, desperation turned to disorientation as Dig wandered for three days, the oppressive darkness gnawing at his senses. Yet, amid his fear and confusion, the very walls seemed to whisper secrets, drawing him inexorably deeper. At last, he stumbled into a vast underground chamber where the air hummed with crackling energy, and the walls danced with ethereal lights. At the chamber’s heart lay a pool of radiant blue, swirling with chaotic energy.

Compelled by a force he could not understand, Dig reached out. As his hand grazed the pool's surface, a torrent of wild magic surged through him, filling his mind with visions of boundless chaos and creation. The raw energy seared into his being as Dig felt the magic roil within him. The pool pulsed violently, and an intense burst of energy threw him back, collapsing the entrance and leaving him adrift in darkness once again. It took several harrowing days before he finally emerged back into the world, indelibly changed.

Monastic Training (1231-1240 CE)

Exhausted, he attempted to return to his scattered clan, but strange phenomena haunted his path. Animals followed him only to combust into ashes abruptly, and once, a demon materialized out of thin air and attacked him viciously. Near death, Dig was saved by Brother Jarl, one of the monks from the ambushed group, and carried him to his monastery.

When Dig regained consciousness, Brother Jarl extended an olive branch, offering sanctuary and a path to mastery over his chaotic abilities. Warily, Dig accepted. Thus began his life at the monastery, a place of serene contemplation nestled in the mountains. The monks trained him in martial arts, meditation, and inner peace. Dig thrived under their tutelage, balancing his brute strength with the monks' teachings of calm and focus. Under their guidance, his unique sensitivity to the world's energies deepened and sharpened, hinting at a potential far beyond his understanding.

Emergence and Capture (1240 CE)

Despite thriving in monastic life, Dig's curiosity about the world beyond the monastery walls never waned. Forbidden to leave, he often ventured out in secret, losing himself in solitary musings about his place in the universe. During one such secretive excursion, he was ambushed and captured by slavers, who recognized his value as a would-be gladiator. Bound in chains that suppressed all magic, Dig was sold into a brutal life of servitude.

Life as a Captive (1241-1242 CE)

The years that followed were a harrowing blur of cruelty and survival. Shuffled between merciless owners, Dig faced constant exploitation of his abilities. Though beaten and shackled, he learned to harness just enough control to survive but never enough to escape. His powers, erratic and dangerous, ensured that he was continually isolated and heavily guarded. His captors, fearful of his unpredictable surges, kept him muzzled and restrained, yet even under such oppressive conditions, his spirit remained unbroken.

The Monastery at Tetbury (1242 CE)

His fate shifted when he was sold to the scholars of Tetbury , a state-sponsored monastery dedicated to the study of wild magic and the Weave. Under their watchful eyes, Dig found a surprising ally in Harry, a young and empathetic wizard. Harry saw beyond the fearsome exterior, recognizing Dig's struggles and innate potential. Their friendship blossomed, with Harry advocating tirelessly for humane treatment. Together, they delved into the mysteries of Dig's magic, nurturing a bond that grew amid the shadows of captivity.

The Great Escape (1243 CE)

As Harry's frustration with the monastery's treatment of Dig grew, so did his determination to free his friend. Armed with magic scrolls and a daring plan, Harry orchestrated a midnight escape. Under the veil of invisibility and the precision of dimension-altering spells, they slipped past guards and fled into the stormy darkness. Dig, now a fugitive alongside his liberator, faced a new world of freedom yet fraught with peril.

On the Run (1243-1248 CE)

For six perilous years, Harry and Dig traversed the lands of Coia, evading pursuers while unraveling the enigmas of Dig's powers . Through countless towns, each encounter deepened their camaraderie and resolve. Haunted by threats from Mangdor Roth, Tetbury 's ruler, and his secretive organization, they remained ever vigilant, moving swiftly to stay out of reach.

Meeting with Nym Lenore in Calimport (1248 CE)

Their journey brought them to Calimport, where they sought the aid of Nym Lenore, a cunning monk and Harry’s old friend. Nym provided crucial insight: a relic hidden within the monastery of Durmchapel may hold clues to mastering Dig's chaotic abilities. Warned of impending danger as Mangdor Roth’s forces closed in, Harry devised a plan to ensure Dig’s safety.

The Plan to Separate (1249 CE)

To divert the hunters, Harry chose to stay and mislead their pursuers, allowing Dig a head start towards Durmchapel. They agreed to reunite in eight months at the monastery, a promise shadowed by uncertainty. Dig’s solitary journey demanded utmost caution; his erratic powers required constant vigilance to avoid unintended disasters.

Arrival at Durmchapel (1249 CE)

Eight months of relentless travel led Dig to Durmchapel, but Harry was nowhere to be found. Dig uttered the incantation from the scroll Harry had entrusted him, transforming his appearance into a replica of the young wizard. With a final glance at his reflection, now mirroring Harry’s features, Dig approached the monastery, his path shrouded in ambiguity but lit by the hope of answers and reunion.

Description

Dig is a towering, broad-shouldered bugbear standing eight feet tall, with a daunting, shadowy presence. Their fur is a dense, midnight black, streaked with deep, subtle crimson that seems to shift like flowing blood. Their eyes glow with an unsettling, constant red tinge, twitching occasionally as if reacting to unseen magical stimuli. Their large hands are perpetually wreathed in a faint, crackling red aura. Dig typically wears the Enchanted Vagabond's Garb—tattered rags that cling to their frame, giving them the tragic appearance of a fallen beast from a fairy tale. A distinctive 'Masquerade Tattoo' is visible on their forearm when not covered by leather straps.
