The enigmatic substance known as Bukhara Dregs, or Shadow Silt, first entered the annals of Coia's history on 16 December 1. During the turbulent era dubbed "From Commerce to Civil War," enterprising scavengers made a groundbreaking discovery near the active Bukhara Spire Gateways. They found a thick, viscous sludge pooling at the base of these interdimensional portals.
Dubbed Bukhara Dregs or Shadow Silt, this unique substance was quickly theorized to be the condensed residue of interdimensional friction. While its potent properties as a fuel were undeniable, its true origin remained shrouded in mystery. Alchemists in Ironhold, despite their exhaustive efforts, could not definitively determine if it was merely planar waste or, more ominously, the liquified essence of minor demons that had poured into Coia during the preceding Shadow War.
As Coia transitioned into the prosperous Golden Age, the interest in Bukhara Dregs waned, and it largely fell out of favor. However, the unique properties of the sludge found renewed appreciation in the challenging environment of the Shadowfell. In this twilight realm, where traditional fuels struggle to burn effectively, Shadow Silt's tenacity provided a vital source of light and warmth.
The substance has since seen a significant resurgence in the markets of the Shadowfell, prized for its ability to defy the plane's damp, crushing gloom. Prominent figures like Retta and Nicodemus Hartwick are known to carry flasks of this indispensable fuel when navigating the treacherous depths of the realm.
Currently, a quantity of this invaluable Shadow Silt is stockpiled in a crate marked "Lamp Oil" within a scavenger's hideout near the ruins of Highborne Summit. It presently awaits sale, its potent energy undiminished since its discovery, having never been destroyed.
