The far northwest expanse of Coia, known as Ghamia, has been historically regarded as a frozen purgatory by the more civilized southern lands. Despite its harsh environment of biting winds and permafrost, it serves as the continent's silent guardian. During the continent's Founding years, settlers avoided this unforgiving land, leaving it to the hardy indigenous tribes and the secretive bugbear clans.
Hidden beneath Ghamia's vast Glacial shelf lies its true significance: the Elemental Anchor. This unique Bukhara Gateway was constructed not for travel but specifically for the containment of immense magical energies. Its crucial purpose became evident during the Shadow War, which raged from Year 67 to 75.
During this conflict, as the spires of Coia suffered widespread corruption, the Elemental Anchor silently absorbed the immense, chaotic magical backlash. This containment prevented the magical energies from shattering Coia's tectonic plates, averting a cataclysm of unimaginable scale. For centuries thereafter, the region of Ghamia functioned as a critical magical heat sink, quietly stabilizing the continent.
However, this long period of stability began to unravel in 1248. The destruction of the Herthe and Wigham Gateways by the militant Dragonbone Vanguard sent ripples through the magical fabric of the world, causing the Elemental Anchor to tremble under the strain. In the recent past, a powerful psychic shockwave originating from Ghamia drove the monk Skrel to seek refuge and answers in Candlekeep.
This event signaled that the Anchor was nearing its capacity, its containment beginning to fail. Consequently, the frozen plains of Ghamia have started to weep raw elemental chaos, a visible manifestation of the instability. This growing elemental disruption quickly led to widespread devastation across the continent, particularly marked by escalating draconic activity.
On June 19, 1249, the tranquil town of Milboliton suffered the brutal Serpent's Assault. A combined Githyanki and dragon attack shattered the community, resulting in the impalement of Minister Rica and the tragic fall of heroes Jojo and Kathon in an outmatched battle. While the Githyanki commander was slain, this act freed its green dragon mount, which then destroyed its rider before flying off.
Amidst this new devastating chapter, a party of adventurers discovered clues to deeper cosmic conspiracies, preparing to revive Jojo. Just eight days later, on June 27, 1249, the Unholy Trinity, aboard the Azure Marie, discovered Vespera, a magnificent floating city, under attack during what became known as the Siege of Vespera. Mind-controlling fairy dragons had stolen the city's essential levitation gems, causing Vespera to begin its descent.
The heroes funded Vespera's emergency landing and subsequent rebuilding, thus revealing the previously hidden city to the world below. This event further confirmed the widespread dragon corruption plaguing the continent and granted the party a powerful levitation gem. All these incidents highlight the growing peril stemming from the destabilization of the Elemental Anchor.
Currently, the land of Ghamia is physically cracking under the immense strain of the contained magical energy, which is now threatening to burst forth. Local wildlife throughout the region is beginning to mutate, a grim testament to the raw elemental chaos seeping into the environment. The silent guardian is collapsing, and the entire continent faces an uncertain future.
