Emberfield Cottage Basement

16 October 72

The Emberfield Cottage Basement was not always a place of sinister repute, but instead served as a secret haven for the reclusive Arcanist Theron. During the tumultuous Shadow War, it became the nexus of his clandestine activities, a sanctum where he crafted spells and artifacts of immense, often dangerous, power. Theron specifically chose this location because it was a natural confluence of potent ley lines, which he expertly tapped into by excavating a series of labyrinthine tunnels that acted as arcane apertures.

With the war's conclusion came Theron's mysterious disappearance, consumed by a magical backlash from the sealing of Stonewatch Island, leaving the basement abandoned. Over time, his once-powerful enchantments began to decay and crumble. This decay allowed the trapped residual dark energies to warp the intricate tunnels, transforming them into a perilous warren of unpredictable magic.

Decades later, the ambitious Crispin Beanwhistle, having forged a pact with an extraplanar entity, uncovered the forgotten basement. Recognizing its potent source of unstable power, Crispin swiftly claimed the tunnels as his personal lair and base of operations. He now harnesses its volatile energies to fuel his own ascent as a prominent fixer within Emberfield's burgeoning criminal underworld.

As Crispin exploits the site, Theron's ancient wards continue to weaken further. This ongoing decay permits the malevolence trapped within the tunnels to grow unchecked, making the entire location increasingly decaying and corrupted.
