Hasaldon

09 December 38

The origins of what is now known as The Freehold of Bone began with its foundational settlement on 09 December 38. Decades later, during the darkest days of the Shadow War, from Year 67 to 75, this location transformed. It became a desperate refugee camp, huddled in a natural ravine to escape the extra-dimensional horrors pouring from the Bukhara Spires. The settlement, then called Hasaldon, survived not by fighting, but by hiding beneath the corpses of the fallen.

When the initial invasion was finally halted in Year 75, the survivors were left hardened, cynical, and deeply traumatized. They steadfastly refused to rejoin the emerging civilizations of Coia, viewing the Spire Gateways as ticking time bombs. For centuries thereafter, Hasaldon remained a secluded scavenger camp, defined by its isolation and focus on survival.

From Year 75 to 575, during the long period of the Civil War, Hasaldon became a crucial haven. It welcomed anarchists, deserters, and necromancers fleeing widespread persecution. It was during this era that the settlement declared itself a Freehold, recognizing no king and no god, only the sanctity of survival. This declaration marked its transition into The Freehold of Bone.

The city's true identity was further forged in the aftermath of the Dragon's Fury, which raged from Year 97 to 104. Following the victories of Meklen Armash and the ultimate fall of the dragons, the scavengers of Hasaldon mobilized. This monumental effort, known as The Great Harvest, saw them trek to the battlefields of Ironhold and Whisperwind.

There, they painstakingly stripped the flesh from slain dragons and countless lesser beasts. They then hauled massive ribs, femurs, and skulls back to their ravine. These colossal bones were ingeniously used to construct the impenetrable, ossified walls that define the vertical favela of stone and bone, allowing the city to grow upward rather than outward.

In more recent times, a significant external event directly impacted the Freehold. In June 1248, the Herthe Gateway was destroyed by The Dragonbone Vanguard, sending a powerful magical shockwave across the land. This shockwave reached the Freehold, cracking its southern Femur Gate. The xenophobic populace immediately blamed the heroes of the outside world, perceiving them as a direct threat.

By 1249, the rise of Velsharoon and the subsequent corruption of dragonkind intensified the Freehold's isolationist stance. Hasaldon locked its gates tighter than ever before. Its inhabitants now view the outside world as a corpse awaiting inevitable decay, and they are merely sharpening their knives for the eventual harvest. The Freehold of Bone currently exists in a state of defensive isolationism, teetering on the brink of internal conflict.
