The District, originally known as the Grand Bazaar of Hasaldon, came into being during the golden years of Commerce, around 80 CR. This was a time when the Bukhara Spire Gateways brought immense wealth to the city. The bazaar itself was a magnificent open-air market, adorned with white marble and vibrant silks, with the Cathedral of Saint Mercator at its heart, serving as the city's primary hub for trade and prosperity.
However, a grim fate awaited the district. The onset of the Civil War, coupled with the corruption of the gateways, began to erode its grandeur. Around 104 CR, following the devastating Dragon's Fury, the city of Hasaldon commenced the construction of The Mandible Maw to harden its defenses. This massive undertaking required vast resources, and the marble of the Grand Bazaar was stripped away to reinforce the city's outer walls.
In its place, Hasaldon's abundant resource – bone – was utilized, transforming the district. Over the centuries, the Grand Bazaar devolved into The Freehold of Bone. The once-mighty merchant guilds collapsed, giving way to tribal syndicates that asserted control through brute strength rather than established law.
The Cathedral of Saint Mercator, once a beacon of faith, was gutted, its bells silenced to prevent their use for signaling rival militias. Now, the district operates as a chaotic, anarchic slum, where The Marrow Toll is the only law truly respected. No noble house holds sway; instead, it is ruled by the Bone Barons, intimidating gang leaders adorned in scrimshaw armor.
The philosophy of 'keeper' governs ownership: an item belongs to whoever can physically hold it. Despite its lawless nature, The Freehold of Bone remains the primary marketplace for illicit goods, particularly those smuggled past The Mandible Maw. This dark economy, however, suffered a severe blow in 1248 CR.
The destruction of several Bukhara Spire Gateways by the Dragonbone Vanguard in 1248 CR drastically curtailed the influx of exotic goods. This scarcity led to hyperinflation, strangling the district's already precarious economy. The Freehold of Bone is currently volatile and starving, teetering on the brink of open warfare due to the severe resource scarcity and escalating tensions.
